What is altar serving?
Being an altar server is much more than helping the priests and deacons during church. Being an altar means “serving God and His people at Mass.” Altar servers help the priest and fellow worshipers to praise God as well as they can. They also serve God by helping the priest and people carry special objects and perform special actions at mass. Although a mass can go on perfectly fine without an altar server, weekly mass goes on much more smoothly with an altar server (or altar servers) present to ensure that the priest can lead the congregation in worship.
Who can join?
In the early church, an altar server, also known as an accolyte, was a young male who was on the path to become a priest. Since then, the role of an altar server has changed. Boys who want to be accolytes no longer need to become priests and now young girls are invited to be altar servers as well.
What are the opportunities?
Growth in service to God and His people
Participating at the altar at Mass
Fellowship with the community of altar servers
When do we meet and what happens after that?
If you are ages 9 thru 18, have received First Communion, and would like to become and altar server, click here to fill out our inquiry form and our Altar Server Coordinator will contact you. If you have specific questions, feel free to email us.
Training is completed in one session. Altar servers are scheduled according to Mass preference and as needed. A rehearsal is required for the Easter Vigil Mass and will be scheduled accordingly. Fun activities, such as picnics and outings are planned during the year.
